The Antipodes

The Antipodes

This story begins with a debt. And then a book launch: Lawrence Weschler’s Everything That Rises: A Book of Convergences. And then a contest to celebrate that launch: A Convergence of Convergences. And among the finalists for the contest—too many to mention—I got a surprise. The Antipodes by Chris Zic asserts that the United Kingdom and the Philippines look alike.

Tiffany Blue

Tiffany Blue

It started with the color I wanted to paint the walls of my room with. Of course I wanted blue. But something not too blue. I ended up choosing a very icy aquamarine (as noted by the man who did the painting), but continued to be fascinated by the remote regions of cyan. Then I discovered Tiffany Blue and its reputation of all things luxurious and romantic. It is Tiffany […]

Debatables (In Grayscale)

Debatables (In Grayscale)

“Piece of Crap” A phrase I’ve never heard to describe a Mac Book Pro. Outraged? Don’t look at me, go comment there. At least I got to discover Neil Young’s great song. “You still deserve to die.” Have a look at the Lawyer Client’s Manifesto at Gaping Void. I always take a jab at lawyers, often at my dad (don’t ask), and I’m pretty jaded about them. Sorry, but I […]

Don’t Auto-Hyphenate Print Layouts When Featuring Websites

Don't Auto-Hyphenate Print Layouts When Featuring Websites

A note to all print publishers out there: if you’re doing a layout for an article that mentions URLs, don’t auto-hyphenate. from Bookwatch Vol. 11, Issue 2, page 26 Hyphenated text is a elegant feature of typesetting. HTML as Art Pieces?

HTML is traditionally a means to format a document on the web, as word processors are meant to format documents on print (or on the desktop). Non-traditionally, though, some people come up with ways to “paint” with HTML. Here’s an example:

Pisay, the Movie

Just learned that Auraeus Solito, director of Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros and Tuli, has created a movie about Philippine Science High School aptly called Pisay. (That’s the official nickname of PSHS, and nothing else.) Even better is that the film is a finalist in the 2007 Cinemalaya Film Festival. According to a Pisay blogger, the full-length movie finalist won the best script and hence received funding from Cinemalaya. A […]

Project Grow

Teddy Hwang’s proposal is simple: he’ll create websites for you, for free. No cash (though donations are welcome), just acknowledgment that he did it for you. Project Grow has three phases, so check out which one you’re eligible for. It’s not everyday I find someone politely asking people to have work thrown one’s way, much less for free. He says it’s to better himself, perhaps having found the most amazing […]
