MC1: A Phone With “Miss Calling”

Tagged the mobile phone made exclusively for Filipinos, the MC1 is essentially any ordinary cellphone with one additional feature: you can make missed calls on purpose. To understand the true value of a missed call, or in local vernacular, miskol, it is necessary to look into the essence of what happens to be the 2007 Sawikaan Salita ng Taon (Word of the Year). In this event, the miskol, entered by […]

Visit the Newly-Unveiled Komiks.ph!

Yet another one of our projects, which we hope to be the central source for comics in the Philippines, has launched last June 18. If you’re a comic artist, you can get free blog hosting at Komiks.ph. Yes, free. We’ve been lazily planning for it for the past couple of months but suddenly set a deadline when the ToyCon came. (There Garro picked up a bunch of indie komiks to […]

Was Jose Rizal Really A Pacifist?

In second year high school, when we studied El Filibusterismo by Jose Rizal, my classmates had yet another proof that I was mataray when I disagreed with the notion that Rizal was against overthrowing Spanish colonial rule by force. Today I came across an article that pigeonholes the Philippines’ national hero as one who prefers enduring oppression rather than resisting it. I’m not sure that’s what Manuel L. Quezon III […]

Online Offline Intertwine

Rattling off online and offline happenings interwined with one another. UP Blogger’s Circle Meetup BA, Marielle, Noel, J (and his family), Phillip, Garro, and I met at The Chocolate Kiss Cafe (downstairs then moved upstairs) for the first offline meeting of the UP Blogger’s Circle last Friday. ‘Twas difficult coming up with a rigid plan with all our questions, but we all agreed we wanted an offline presence—otherwise we won’t […]

Pisay, the Movie

Just learned that Auraeus Solito, director of Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros and Tuli, has created a movie about Philippine Science High School aptly called Pisay. (That’s the official nickname of PSHS, and nothing else.) Even better is that the film is a finalist in the 2007 Cinemalaya Film Festival. According to a Pisay blogger, the full-length movie finalist won the best script and hence received funding from Cinemalaya. A […]

2007 Philippine Elections: Will Online Campaigns Work?

Will online election campaign tools win an election? The answer to his own question was no. Regnard Raquedan protests. Here’s my take (on the topic bloggers will most likely analyze for the rest of the 2007 Philippine local and legislative election campaign season because it’s good linkbait and shows just how much they love the Internet, and are therefore supposedly knowledgeable about it). While I disagree with the elitism mentioned […]

PTB vs. PWiT: Philippine Crab Mentality Online

Okay, I don’t understand why people have to create something out of nothing, i.e., pit Pinoy Tech Blog against PWiT. (Backtrack: Pinoy Tech Blog is the Philippines’ Premier Technology Blog while PWiT stands for Philippine Week in Tech: Current News, Views and Reviews. A mere parroting of their taglines? I’m avoiding any subjective descriptions here. An added note though—PWiT is obviously a play on TWiT, which stands for This Week […]

Friends + Fireworks

This is my attempt at a personal entry for reasons you shall soon find out. Alas, I failed. Aimee, one of four high school friends I finally met after four long years at the SM Mall of Asia last Friday, asked me why I didn’t like to use LiveJournal and why I didn’t write about personal things there, or anywhere else. The first question is easy. Here’s a partial answer. […]

Another Reason Apple iPhone Will Suck—For Filipinos

Apple fans the world over are probably having parties to celebrate the announcement of the Apple iPhone (not the Cisco one). The status messages of my buddies on Yahoo! Messenger are babbling about doing anything they can to get their paws on one (even if it takes a lap dance, one of them said!). But I’ve already read several shortcomings of the iPhone as well as counterarguments to those. And […]
