Saw this in my Twitter feed, apparently being sold locally. I really just wanted to keep this nice little quote on my blog.
Turns out it’s a project by Florida-based 48 Savvy Sailors. What are the odds that shop asked permission or even obtained this design from the source instead of Pinterest, Tumblr, or other repost hotspots? I sent emails, but haven’t received any answers.
Interestingly enough, Tumblr has recently updated its Terms of Service to include an “attribution policy reminding people not to be jerks”.
I love the Internet, I really do, but social networks have blurred the lines of attribution and intellectual property—if they haven’t been completely erased already.
Which is just sad for creators of any kind. The value of their work has been reduced to electronic signals in the form of thumbs going up or hearts and stars getting shaded, because why bother paying for their hard work when the said work can just be downloaded?
We’re paying for the internet connection anyway, right?
