I wasted a lot of time and money. I have been more successful on linkedin its free and I do have to spend some but at least there are some results. Yes, social networking tools would be a very very good tool, as well as email and blogs. As my former boss often say, you can't fax a handshake. I still think it is OK to pay for entrance fee and breakfast for a networking event. What I don't understand is why I should be paying an annual fee. That's total bullshit! In case you attend next time, and I hope you still do, just be sure you are ready and have a goal. Collecting business cards is a stupid goal. I would rather spend an hour talking with 3 people than have 3 minutes with 20 who obviously won't remember me afterwards. Also remember that some people really don't have a clue on what you do and sometimes the English we use sounds like French to them. So, be ready to introduce who you are in simpler terms.
