Pirates, Penguins, and Pupils is a seminar about the ill-effects of piracy in schools and the overall socio-economic scenario in the country, and the advocacy of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) as alternative to pirated software, especially in the academic setting. Though cost-effective and easily accessible, pirated software do not serve as a long term solution to the rampant intellectual property theft leading to decline of legal software indstries. FOSS can prove to be very useful in the academe, especially to those with minimal budget yet do not want to resort to illegal acquisition of software.
This seminar is a project of the Tuesday class of CS 196 in the 2nd Semester, AY 2005-2006 in UP Diliman for the 4th year high school students of UP Integrated School (UPIS), held on March 24, 2006.
