You started well and the starting jerks are very important as they give you foresight into what to plan for the future conferences.
But still it went good and nice as can be made out from the writeup and the photographs. Most importantly you chose the 'correct' place to organize the conference and this is very crucial. Most people end up selecting downtown places and that becomes one of their biggest mistakes.People judge by the venue, overall organization, participants.speakers and after a whole bunch of it comes the food part.Surely this was not a birthday party to worry so much about the food :).But if you go this way you would soon be celebrating anniversaries of your successful conferences ! Keep it going dear :)

Yup, extra extra leeway as much as possible.

I won't go into details here but we did discuss having an afterparty; unfortunately the idea fizzled due to several reasons. But yeah, networking has to be a priority.

Thanks for the input! We're already discussing changes we'll be making for next year's event. But it's going to be mini conference season again, so stay tuned. :D

Super late feedback, but since you've got a year to plan for the next one, I guess there's lots of time for this.

Regarding speakers being late: if you mean that you want your speakers to be there by or before the time the conference begins, you're being unrealistic. (Of course, if you mean that you want your speakers to be there at least an hour before their scheduled time, then that's ok, that's about the standard expectation for these things.)

The other thing I would suggest is that you make an event of the after-party as well, because this is where you make the social connections that make these conferences successful in the long-term. Simply sending everyone home afterwards wastes the excitement and energy levels that you spent the whole day building up. Generally you'll get a small crowd of about 10-20% of your total attendees showing up at the after-party, and you can use that time to get direct feedback and exchange notes with the participants that liked what you were doing.

Great post-conference assessment Ia! I'm pretty sure we would be better prepared next time. One feedback I read was that the announcement of bank payment was too late, one day before the conference itself. Hopefully next time, the long queue for registration and payment will at least be minimized through the bank payment system. :-)
