Websites and Other Media

The @rte Movement

Tools: Adobe Photoshop, HTML, CSS
Tasks: publicity materials, website, resource speaker for Photoshop tutorials*

The @rte Movement

I was co-head of The @rte Movement: Art and Technology United last year (2005). Logistical nightmares and so many details to attend to. But it was groundbreaking; Jael had a vision and it came to life.

Photshop Tutorials Phase 3

*With Tweety and Jael, for the 1st Engineering Marketing Congress contestants. This one wasn’t an @rte event (we had legit speakers and talks for @rte!) but was, well, related.

Monitor

Tasks: content and layout for print issues, webdesign for online issues (January 2004, March 2004)

Monitor Online - Januray 2004
Monitor Online - March 2004

Monitor, the official newsletter of UP CURSOR. Of course we like journalism. We never could get enough of it.

Other Cursor Work

Tools: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, real paint!

Tasks: Lots of banner painting and banner tarpaulin designing (I was, after all, part of the “banner committee”—for three years). Back when FOPC still didn’t have a domain, we were put in charge of making a site for it and we had to scrounge up some free hosting for it (it’s defunct now); the theme that year was “My Freshie-ous” (yes, LOTR). Also helped Jael tweak the latest version of the Cursor site (hurrah for Drupal). Also was in charge of the souvenir program for CS Week in cooperation with the Department.

Anecdotes

My first org, the start of my org life in UP, the UP Association of Computer Science Majors. I think that aside from the main goal of its members is to par-tay (and I mean that in a good way), Cursor has developed in me that certain instinct to survive, belong, stand for what you believe in, be proud, and keep at it. If you look at it in one way, Cursor is/has a lot of work. Year in, year out, the traditions never fade, and at times new ones are thrown in. The question is, where are you in the whole thing? Are you crummily resisting a challenge (i.e. mission)? Or are up up for it?

Somebody once asked me, what does Cursor have in store for me anyway? And I said, well, I found my niche in there. I guess it’s mostly about what you want to do in there and finding it. That’ll tell you what Cursor has to offer. If you want friends, you’ll find friends. If you want anything else, you’ll find it there. It’s up to you to look for it.

And as most will probably say, it’s not for everyone. I know I wasn’t much use when more things came my way, but I guess I knew I had to answer to those things as well. I tried my best to juggle them all. I knew I had shortcomings. I knew there were lots of controversies (not necessarily because of me, but I knew of them, and they exist, until now). But I knew that the die-hards would lead to keep things in place.

Finally, I am so thankful that because of this org I have gained awareness of the social (and sometimes political) life that goes on in the College. The Engineering Week is unparalleled. Enough said.

  1. The Two Pillars of Learning * Stellify #

[...] First, I got a glimpse of the annual car-stuffing event held by the Upsilon fraternity at the AS parking lot. I joined as part of CURSOR the last two years (you obviously know why). The thought of going at was scary at first, but it was a rush every time. Fortunately nobody has farted inside the poor Toyota Corolla, but the car that was used last year had the back window shattered (not our fault). We almost broke the record. Almost. But we enjoyed the free Starbucks and the larger-than-life view of the fireworks. [...]
