Web
Tools: Adobe Photoshop, HTML, CSS, JSP
Tasks: The old UP ACM Website (no longer used) was created mainly as an entry to the Student Chapter Excellence Awards (summer of 2005).
Tools: Adobe Photoshop, other Office programs
Tasks: As Secretary/Executive Head for Records of the student chapter I was mainly in charge of the documents and most of time, publicity materials that needed to be created quickly. I also designed a logo for UP ACM’s official newsletter, The Kernel, where I served as Associated Editor. Also helped out with the ACM Student Chapter Excellence entries in 2005 (and just a tiny bit this year).
Anecdotes
Trivia: I knew the Philippine student chapter of Association for Computing Machinery existed just as I was about to be accepted into Cursor — I stumbled upon it here. Not that those two had any relation, but I was really curious about this ACM. But it was made up mostly of faculty members and was not exactly open to the public.
That was sophomore year. Fast forward to 2005, the officers of the chapter suddenly called a General Assembly for anyone who wished to join. That also happened in the middle of the Eng’g job fair. Perfect for our resumes, most thought. Still, there was no harm in attending. I heard there was free food too.
A few hours after, we had Jollibee for lunch, and I was part of the Council. Like, whoa.
Anyway, UP ACM has gone through a lot in the short time it’s been revitalized and opened to the undergrads. The biggest issue was getting members, convincing them to join us. Often in comparison to Cursor (or CompSoc, or even UnPLUG). I think we did our very best to make the most out of our longer-than-one-year term. The org has made a name for itself inside the Department, the College, the University, and the rest of the world. If you’re geeky like us, and believe that technology can make a difference, then you should be part of it. You don’t need to be an expert. Just advocate.
